For employers in West Virginia, workers compensation insurance is essential to provide coverage for employees injured in the course of their work. There are steps that an employer can take to avoid increasing premiums and to help get their injured staff members back to work sooner.

Keeping premiums low:
To prevent premiums increasing it’s important to practice good risk management. It might be helpful to establish a committee or group to locate problem areas and work on solutions for improving workplace safety, as well as to keep records on safety issues. Appointing a risk manager is another consideration.

Consider increasing your deductibles. Having higher deductibles might even act as an incentive to improve the health and safety aspects of the workplace and reduce accidents as much as possible.

Return-to-work policies:
Getting injured workers back to work as soon as possible is beneficial to both the workplace and the employee. It’s important to communicate regularly with your injured workers to see how they are coping – workers who feel valued are more likely to want to return to work.

Consider an integration process so that an injured worker can return to work on a gradual basis at a level he or she is able to manage.

Also consider appointing a “return-to-work coordinator” to manage communications with injured employees and look after their reintegration.
