In West Virginia, workers
compensation insurance provides financial protection to businesses in
case of employee accident or injury in the course of his or her work. To
avoid accidents from happening, it’s important for a business to
practice good risk management.
Risk management involves the identification of hazards in the workplace,
risk assessment to determine if a risk to people is present, and risk
control – either by elimination or minimization. According to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.), the top three causes of workplace injury are over-exertion, level-ground falls, and bodily reaction.
Definitions of these are as follows:
• Over-exertion – injury from excessive lifting, carrying, holding, pushing or pulling of an object.
• Level-ground falls – falling on flat ground as opposed to falling off ladders and roofs etc.
• Bodily reaction – injury caused from climbing, bending, slipping and tripping.
To help reduce the risk of accidents, hazards need to first be
recognized and investigated to determine if there is an appropriate way
of reducing the risk or eliminating it entirely. The I.I.I. also
recommends doing an annual review of incidents that do occur to help
recognize patterns.
By dealing with hazards and reducing the workplace risk-level, you may
also decrease the number of accidents, the level of interruption to your
business, and keep the cost of your West Virginia Workers Compensation down in the long term!
